Transatlantic love – Have you ever stopped and considered how many A-listers are living in a long-distance relationship right now? Hundreds I’m sure – But how do today’s celebrities keep the fire burning along the geographic journey of love? – Is the distance any easier for the wealthy elite?
Today we attempt to answer this, along with juicy insider stories. That’s right, we uncover which famous LDR’s stood the test of time and identify with the ones that sadly fizzled out.
Famous long distance relationships that endured the test of time
Ed Sheeran & Cherry Seaborn
World famous singer, Ed Sheeran and his childhood sweetheart Cherry Seaborn started dating mid-2015 and got engaged last Christmas 2017. Rumours were that they got married secretly, but the story was later proved false. Cherry attended Duke University in North Carolina, and then, it is said, she worked as an Advisory Consultant at Deloitte & Touche LLP in New York.
Their celebrity ‘LDR’ was a little tough with Ed going on tours and Cherry living on a different continent. But they managed to pull through. Having endured years of the long distance relationship, Cherry finally decided to move back to Britain for a full-time with Ed. Sheerios (Ed Sheeran fans) are now on their toes waiting for the couples wedding announcement.
Amal Alamuddin & George Clooney
The start of Amal Alamuddin and George Clooney’s relationship might be one of the cutest stories, despite the age gap of 17 years. Georges’ plans of never getting married again or having children, was completed thwarted the moment he laid eyes on Amal. Starting with an exchange of super cheesy emails where George pretended to be his dog, they ended up getting married and having twins.
So how did they manage to survive their long-distance relationship? When inquired, Clooney said, “We have a rule whereby we are never apart for more than a week.” and, “We also stay in touch via social media, so we try to keep close even if we’re in different parts of the world.”
David & Victoria Beckham
It’s a common occurrence for soccer players to move to new clubs, meaning that they have to migrate a lot. And it was the same with the renowned, professional football player, David Beckham. David and Victoria had to spend time apart during their busy schedules. And this, in a few instances, brought out problems in their marriage.
More like, problems created by paparazzi. Victoria stated that even though she trusted David wholeheartedly, news reporters would give them a hard time if they lived away from each other for too long.
It might not seem like a big problem for us, but for a celebrity who needs to maintain a certain image, it can be a very emotionally exhausting issue.
However, in the end, they didn’t let any of that hurt their relationship. Instead, they used it to keep things spicy.
In an interview with Victoria, she said her happiness within a long-distance relationship might explain “why we’re not bored with each other after 11 years”. The Beckham couple is probably the best example of a successful long-distance relationship. The love that still shines in their eyes is proof for that.
Prince Harry & Meghan Markle
Finally, we’re onto the talk of the world these days; Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. Apparently, Meghan’s friend had set her up on a blind date with the Prince himself. Having dated since the year 2016, they had their royal wedding just last week (May 2018).
Although living a long distance apart, they kept their love alive by “Never going more than two weeks from seeing each other”. They also said that they made each other their highest priorities during the relationship.
Let’s take a moment to wish them a happy wedded life! Millions of Brits out there are waiting to see more Princes and Princesses running about the palace.
Troian Bellisario & Patrick J. Adams
The superstar couple is famously known for the shows ‘Pretty Little Liars’ and ‘Suits’. An on-set friendship formed, which slowly developed into a steamy romance. The once Long-distance couple tied the knot on December 10, 2016.
We are pleased to report they are still happily married. They are quoted saying – “I think now, the wonderful thing is learning how to be together, and learning that we like it – which is quite a relief!” Troian has also revealed they made their relationship work by “a lot of air miles, regular Skype dates and lots of love letters”. Cute right?
‘One thing they all have in common is the finances available to travel. But does money really solve all the issues found in many long distance relationships? Or are there other points to consider?’
Celebrity breakups: Famous LDR’s that failed
Russell Brand & Katy Perry
The life of a pop star may seem the dream life for many. V.I.P parties and jet-setting around the world. Everything seems to work out for them. Well, if that’s how you think, you might be a teensy bit deluded.
Russell and Katy tied knots in 2010 after dating for a little more than a year. They even had a much-talked-of, extravagant, Indian style, traditional wedding in Rajasthan. But that lasted for just 14 months.
Even though initially, Russell had a different reason for filing a divorce, he later revealed another reason for the doom of their marriage. “Katy was obviously very, very occupied and busy.
I was occupied and busy too, but not to the same degree,” he said. If money was all you needed, they would have still been together. But whoops, it didn’t work out, did it? The fame and fortune all come at a price.
Lewis Hamilton & Nicole Scherzinger
Formula 1 Ace, Lewis Hamilton, and Popstar, Nicole Scherzinger, dated on and off for eight years. And throughout these years they hit the gossip columns for all the wrong reasons. Cheating scandals, bad-mouthing, fights, and the list goes on. Their long-distance relationship seemed to be taking a toll on them both. ”It’s not been easy – she lives in LA, I live in Monaco and I’m travelling a lot for work,”
Lewis said in an interview. “Her job is shifting all the time, whether it’s X Factor or Dancing With The Stars or Cats or music. Juggling your schedule to meet with the other is very hard, and it’s a long year with F1.
At one point, I flew to Asia for five weeks and couldn’t see her. It’s been tough.” Nicole too has said that she “wouldn’t wish a long-distance relationship on anyone”.
Duke of Wellington & Catherine Wellesley
Their marriage was an early military long distance relationship that failed. The Duke of Wellington, Arthur Wellesley, met, and fell in love with Catherine in 1796. Later on, he moved to India for ten years and after his return, got married to Catherine.
Why was it a disastrous marriage though? Well, ten years can change a person’s appearance a great deal. Upon seeing her after his return from India, Author had exclaimed, “She has grown ugly, by love!” But alas he was bound by honour to marry her.
They had children of their own but were known to sleep in separate rooms once he returned from war. This case is almost like dating a person online and then realizing that they look much different, from their profile pictures, in person.
Nicholas Hoult & Jennifer Lawrence
Movie Stars Nicholas Hoult and Jennifer Lawrence once again had an on-off relationship. As is the case with many other celebrity couples, they too had a hard time maintaining their long distance relationship due to the demanding nature of their careers.
Nicholas revealed he was upset that ‘JLaw’ didn’t try to make time for him even when there were opportunities to do so. Like the incident where she opted to go to the Dior fashion show instead of the Wireless festival that Nicholas would be attending.
We all know that Jlaw is a darling. However, we also know that some of her actions can be uncalled for. But, we never know, they might even start dating once again!
