Please introduce yourselves:
I’m Michi and his name is Cruz! I am 23 while Cruz is turning 25 in December. He lives in Florida, U.S and I’m in Ontario, Canada, so there are about 1400 miles between us. We met on an MMORPG about 6 years ago through a mutual friend. Funny thing is that we started off as enemies first because I beat him in our first game together ?. But then after hanging out and spending more time with each other, we started to fall for each other. I did reject him the first time though, but luckily when I started to grow feelings for him too and confessed 4 months after- he still liked me back! We met in person just last year after almost 5 years of being in an LDR and have had a total of 3 visits so far. Hoping to visit way more and close the distance soon ❤️
What first attracted you to each other?
In a weird way- I really loved Cruz’s cockiness and confidence even though I hated his guts the first time I met him online. Cruz says he liked that I was mean but in a cute way? Ahahaha
How often do you visit each other?
We have only had a total of 3 visits so far in our 6 years of being together. Hoping to visit much more often later in the future.
Any travel tips or travel stories you would like to share?
We have to fly to each other! Me and Cruz never really flew in a plane before prior to our visits, so it was nerve-racking for both of us. If you’re a first-time flyer, make sure you’re early and double (or triple) check that you have everything! Being ready and prepared gives you a little more confidence. Also, be careful of third party websites. Plane tickets can be cheap, but if you ever need to make a change to your tickets – it can be hell ahahaha. The customer service might be lacking.
How do you enjoy your time when you meet up?
Me and Cruz equally enjoy staying in and going out so we have a lot of things we do during our visits, but one thing for sure- we loooove to eat. We are always looking for new places to explore new foods we have never tried before.
What are your favourite long distance activities?
Watching movies or t.v series! Our favourites are always changing ?. Right now our favourite it’s Black Panther. The website, rabb.it is an LDR couple’s best friend.
Do you enjoy the LDR communities online?
When I first started my LDR, it was very hard for me to find people who related to my situation in person. That’s when I found the huge LDR community online on Tumblr and on Instagram. It really helped me feel like I wasn’t alone and that I could find advice and tips from talking to other couples in the same situation.
What has been your most memorable experience as a couple?
Our first meeting for sure! After almost 5 years of being in an online LDR, it felt almost unreal that we got to see each other in person ❤️
Relationship pictures – Share your fav’s?
This would probably be my favourite picture! It was the first ever picture that we took together in person ?❤️
This picture was from our second visit where Cruz came to Canada for the first time ever:
And this is my fav picture from our third visit. I just love it because we are so goofy and that date was probably one of the best dates we’ve had so far. Cruz took me to the one place that he always wanted to take the girl he loves. (Corny! I know):
What do you value the most about Cruz?
He is the one person that has never given up on me. He has always supported and encouraged me to go for what I want in life especially when I’m too scared to.
How did your friends and family react to your LDR?
We started dating during a time where relationships that started online were not as common as today or accepted (there’s still a bit of a stigma today though!), so naturally, my friends were sceptical. My mom, however, had the worse reaction to my LDR. She actually at one point banned me completely from talking to him when I was at home. I had to email him from my high school’s computer lab at lunchtime to talk to him. It’s been 6 years since me and Cruz have been dating and I am still struggling to get her to be more accepting of my relationship. She is very old-fashioned and strict when it comes to the Internet and online dating.
Name your best LDR gift?
Cruz says that the best gift was me going to see him and him coming to see me. (I thought that was really sweet!)
Do you have a favourite quote or motto?
Cruz’s favourite quote is:
“The best and most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or even touched. They must be felt with the heart.”
What advice would you give to other LDR couples?
Make the most of every moment in your LDR! I feel like a lot of LDR couples (even myself!) focus a lot on the end goal of closing the distance and dread every waking moment without their S/O. Try to stay positive and cherish all these LDR moments too!
How would you describe your perfect weekend together?
A perfect weekend would be actually being able to be with each other in person doing whatever hahaha. Other than that, in our everyday LDR life, we love days where we can spend all day just texting and being on a video call with each other either playing games, laughing at funny videos or memes or watching movies together.
What are your long-term plans?
The long-term plan is, of course, closing the distance! Hoping to do that soon. I am graduating university this year and depending on how quickly I can find a job and move out- we can finally start the process of getting Cruz to move to Canada with me.
Any funny stores you would like to share?
Our first meeting was kind of a mess! We didn’t get to have a cute LDR first meeting video because I accidentally walked super fast past Cruz at the airport without knowing and he had to run after me. He had asked a random nice lady to help us film our first meeting, but the video cut off right at the moment we met. Oh well, it makes a funny story to share with others ?
What have you learned from living long distance?
I learned to really appreciate the little things that I think a lot of close-distance couples overlook like being able to hold hands or easily meet and hang out almost every day. That appreciation goes a long way in strengthening your relationship.
What is the most romantic thing you have done as a couple?
Cruz says the most romantic thing we’ve done was going to Niagara Falls for a night. Doesn’t seem that romantic at the surface, but that’s actually the first place I took Cruz out on a Skype date (other than inside my room haha!). So it was surreal to actually have him there with me in person.
What challenges/hardships have you overcome?
The biggest challenges and hardships that we still are struggling to overcome are money and family issues especially when it comes to my parents being accepting of my LDR. Those were the two things that kept us from meeting in person for the longest time ever and it continues to make things hard for us to visit.
Do you have nicknames for each other?
Ahahah we used to tease each other a lot by calling each other “bum.” Hence why we call ourselves the Bummy LDR Couple on our social media and blog.
How do you keep your long distance relationship alive and healthy?
Almost all LDR couples would say that communication is definitely the key to a happy and healthy LDR! We also always try to keep things interesting and fun by finding new things to do and planning new adventures.
What are your favourite ways to communicate?
Calling or video chatting is our favourite on either Skype or KakaoTalk. Makes the distance seem smaller that way!
